In Colombia, we have many special dates to commemorate events such as independence, World Book Day, Environment Day, and more. We also commemorate personalities such as women, mothers, children, and fathers, among others. However, there is one date that is often forgotten: March 19th, Men's Day. In this blog, we'll tell you how it was born and why we celebrate this date in our country.
We know that International Men's Day is November 19th. This date was chosen by an American professor in 1992 to highlight men's achievements and honor their role in humanity. However, it wasn't until 1999 that UNESCO endorsed this date worldwide.
While this date is celebrated worldwide in November, in Colombia it is celebrated in March, due to our country's predominant Catholic culture. March 19th is the feast day of Saint Joseph, the husband of Mary and adoptive father of Jesus. Therefore, it was decided that this would be the appropriate date to commemorate men, and it also marks the opening of Holy Week.
